As a girl with curly hair this is a question I get all the time. Since all curls are not created equal there is no definitive answer. I can tell you how I manage my curly locks and it’s a relatively simple routine.
My best tip is to not wash your hair daily. You want to keep as much moisture in those curls as possible and even mild shampoos are the enemy of moisture. I condition my hair daily and shampoo about every 10 days. I can hear you saying “I could never do that”. The truth is I didn’t think I could either. I started with every other day, then two days and so on until I settled at 10 days. It can be done.
After washing or conditioning my hair I employ the Plop Method for drying my hair. Using a T-shirt, after leave in conditioner and/or styler, you “plop” your hair upside down into the shirt and let it dry for about 20 minutes. You can also buy a microfiber hair wrap to do your plopping. This method alone will change your curl life!
Let’s talk about products. Find products that are paraffin and sulfate free. Better for your hair and the environment. I rotate between a few conditioners that work well with my curls. Suave Coconut Oil Conditioner, Suave Moroccan Oil Conditioner or Kantu Shea conditioner. I find that I need to switch up my conditioner after every bottle and these are my favorites.
Finally you have to have an amazing curl product to finalize that hair. Like the conditioner, I tend to rotate between a few different products. However, lately I have been using Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La and I LOVE IT! First of all it’s not expensive which is good because you will use a lot of it. Not only is it great for freshly washed hair it is amazing for refreshing curls.
